and we're starting this hour with the wrangling on capitol hill over the fiscal cliff. we're just 31 days until the deadline which could potentially trigger $7 trillion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases. both republicans and democrats are at a standoff. they are each blaming the other side for holding up the process, but republican congressman terry lee says that by going over the cliff the president may have an ulterior motive. >> many of us fear that the president's real plan here was to let us go over the cliff and blame the republicans, and that's what we look like we're being set up to do, and then if you go over the cliff, then two months later, a month later, the president can come back with a bill and say, hey, we're going to now since the republicans let everyone's taxes go up, i'm going to ride in here now and be the -- the knight in shining armor and lower the taxes on the lower two brackets. >> it is a case that is sparking painful reminders of trayvon martin, another florida teenager shot to death in an incident that has racial overtones. i'm talking about jordan d

, ross. i mean, you don't really know what is going to come out of the u.s. fiscal cliff, how damaging potentially that can be to u.s. confidence, u.s. activity. things seem to be holding up fairly well in china. but i think there is still going to be some concerns about the whole performance of the asian economy and whether that can actually pick up next year. and then, of course, in the eurozone itself, we seem to be mending the problems progressively and taking out the tail risks, which i think is good and that is the bottom line that investors should take going further forward, but at the same time, there are some elements that you can have. if you do a forecast, in a way you could come up with something like 1% quotes for next year, but at the same time, you have to be conscious that we've had such a battery of downside impact, downside negative news coming through really for all economists in the western world in the last few years. you have to be very cognizant of those. >> i think so. julian, we're going to leave because we have to get a break in and we've got to g to egypt as

and congress can't make a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff. a source of great concern for so many people, everyone's taxes will go up, will go up if there's no deal. let's go live to our white house correspondent dan lothian. he's on the scene for us over at the white house. how did it go, dan? >> reporter: well, wolf, we've seen the president do this before in the past whenever he's locked in negotiations with lawmakers. he heads out on the road, either goes to a backyard or sits down around a dinner table to put pressure on congress. that's what he did today when he went to falls church sitting down with the santana family. their parents who also are employed live in the household with them. so if taxes do go up on middle class americans, the overall hit on that household will be $4,000. so they're very concerned, but they were quite happy. they said it isn't every day that the president comes by and hangs out at your house. the message the president was trying to drive home today was aimed directly at congress and using this backdrop to tell a personal story. >> for them to be burdene
